Today was the ribbon cutting ceremony and tour for the new dorms at my alma mater, California College of the Arts. Wow. I didn’t know that my client, Simon Blattner, was a star. Several years ago, he had an office space on Arkansas Street in San Francisco where he ran a paper-making business. At the time, when the surrounding space went up for sale, he decided to purchase it and after some time started the student housing project. Supervisor Malia Cohen was behind the project to address the issue that more and more students in San Francisco were couch surfing and eating ramen, due in part to the housing crisis. The building is phenomenal; it is beautiful, uses 73% less energy than buildings like it, houses up to 400 students and the architects took into consideration how the park across the street would be shaded when they designed it. State of the art washers and dryers are situated on each floor (no going to the basement for these artists); an app alerts them when their laundry is done. Very rough draft.
