Comprehensive branding project for Providence, RI

To understand the city of Providence, in-depth research was done including a historical walking tour, college tours, participation in Water Fire, and attending focus groups and interviews with local artists (including Eugene Lee, set designer for Wicked). The logo, a capital P, and the deliverables came from this research and the anthem (below).

Anthem: Tucked into the smallest state of Rhode Island is a capital city big on creativity. Founded as a place for religious freedom, Providence was first referred to as a lively experiment. Everywhere you turn, you’ll sense an ongoing openness to experimentation, improvisation, self-expression, and independence. As one of the top 25 art destinations in the country and home to some of the most revered institutions of higher learning, Providence delivers an entire world of creative vision concentrated into a small walkable city. Old brick streets lead you to carefully preserved and still utilized historic buildings — as well as hip novelty shops. You’ll find masterpieces filling our many museums. But you’ll also find them on the city’s trashcans, transformed by the local Steel Mill. And you’ll experience a most unique masterpiece at work on our rivers, where Waterfire lights up the nights. Be sure to come hungry. The renowned Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute turns out some of the country’s most talented chefs. All this and more is Providence, spelled with a capital P. As in Plan to be inspired.
